Motorcycle Lighting and Spotlights: Guide, Tips, and FAQs
Spotlights: Approved or Not
Approved spotlights bear the approval mark and can be used on the road in compliance with the highway code. Non-approved spotlights are intended for off-road use or on private property. The distinction is always indicated on the product page: it's not a formal detail, it's what determines if you can switch them on on the road.
Where to Mount Them
Most auxiliary spotlights are attached with clamps to the engine guard tubes, typically with diameters between 21 and 25 mm. If there's no engine guard, dedicated brackets are needed.
Consumption
A 25 W LED consumes much less than a halogen for the same light output and is the obligatory choice for motorcycles with a small alternator. On modern motorcycles, it is still advisable to route through a relay and not power the spotlights directly from the ignition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use non-approved spotlights on the road?
No. Only approved devices can be used on the road; others are for off-road or private property use. We always state which of the two it is on the product page.
What does IP68 mean?
It's the degree of protection against dust and water: 6 means totally protected from dust, 8 means it can withstand prolonged immersion. For a spotlight exposed to rain, this is the desired level.
Are relays and fuses needed?
Yes, for any significant load. The relay prevents all current from passing through the switch, and the fuse protects the system. Many kits include them.
Can LED bulbs replace halogen ones?
Not always: the filament position changes, and thus the beam in the reflector, and on some vehicles, the dashboard signals a burnt-out bulb. We indicate the fitting and declared compatibility on the product page.
Are top case lights connected to the brake light?
Brake light kits for panniers and top cases connect to the motorcycle's electrical system and light up when braking; internal courtesy lights, however, are independent, with their own battery.
