Motorcycle and Scooter Seats and Backrests: guide, tips, and FAQs
Backrest: on the top case or on the frame?
The top case backrest is glued or screwed to the top case lid and requires nothing else: it is the simplest solution if you already have a top case. The frame backrest is attached to a dedicated bracket behind the seat: it is more stable and does not require mounting a top case, but it is specific to the model.
Seats and covers
The complete seat is replaced when the base is broken or the foam has collapsed. The cover is replaced when only the covering is torn and the base is sound: it costs much less, but it must be stretched well and stapled carefully.
Frequently asked questions
Can the backrest be mounted on any top case?
No. Top case backrests are made for a precise series of top cases: the lid profile and hole positions vary. On the product sheet, you will find the codes of the compatible top case.
How do you choose a replacement seat?
Based on the vehicle code. Original seats are molded to the frame and lock hooks: a seat from another model will not close.
Is a waterproof seat cover really useful?
If you leave your motorcycle outdoors, yes: it prevents water from entering the foam through the seams, which is the most common way a seat gets damaged.
Can the cover be installed by yourself?
With patience, yes: remove the seat, detach the old cover, stretch the new one from the center towards the edges, and staple it. However, if the foam is already deformed, it is better to replace the entire seat.
Does the backrest change stability?
It greatly improves passenger comfort on long journeys. It does not alter the chassis, but it must be mounted with the screws and torques indicated by the manufacturer.
