Why can't I wear a cotton t-shirt underneath?
Cotton absorbs sweat and holds it for hours: the result is you get wet, your body loses heat, and not even a winter jacket can warm you up anymore. Technical fibers do exactly the opposite: they wick moisture away from the skin, pushing it to the outside of the garment, where it evaporates without cooling the body.
Merino or synthetic, which is better?
Merino Wool: softer, does not retain odors even after multiple uses, better for long tours with limited washing opportunities. Synthetic: more elastic, dries faster, generally cheaper. If you use it every day and wash frequently, synthetic is fine. For long trips, Merino is worth the expense.
