Motorcycle and Scooter Handguards
Handguards are shields mounted at the ends of the handlebars: they stop cold air and rain from reaching your hands and, in versions with an aluminum core, they protect the levers in case of a fall. They are the accessory that makes the biggest difference in winter, right after heated grips. The catalog includes 16 active items from Kappa Moto and RD Moto, both universal and model-specific.
Motorcycle and Scooter Handguards: guide, tips and FAQs
With or without core
Coreless handguards are made of plastic and only serve to deflect air and water: they are inexpensive and can be mounted on almost anything. Those with an aluminum core have an internal bar fixed on one side to the handlebar weight and on the other to a bracket: they protect the lever in case of a fall and are the choice for off-road and touring.
Installation
The core attaches inside the end of the handlebar, so a hollow handlebar without non-removable bar ends is required. On some motorcycles, the bar ends need to be replaced. The handlebar diameter must be checked before purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do handguards fit all motorcycles?
Universal ones require a hollow handlebar to anchor the core and clear space outwards. Some scooters and some naked bikes with specific bar ends require a specific kit.
Do they really keep your hands warm?
They greatly reduce the direct airflow over the back of the hand, which is the main cause of cold. They do not heat: for that, you need heated grips.
Do they protect levers in a fall?
Only those with an aluminum core, which is why they are the choice for off-road riders. Those made of plastic alone will break at the first impact.
Can they be mounted on a scooter?
Yes, on many scooters, with dedicated kits or with handlebar covers, which are a different and more economical solution. Compatibility is indicated on the product page.
Do they change aerodynamics?
Negligibly for the motorcycle. However, they do change the feel of the handlebars in strong crosswinds, as they offer an additional surface.
